Chair-side Teeth Whitening vs Take Home Whitening Kits?
Chair-side treatment is ideal for patients looking for:
- An immediate whitening solution
- A professionally conducted treatment by a qualified dentist
- An effective whitening for high levels of discoloration
Take-home kits are ideal for patients looking for:
- effective maintenance of the white colour of the teeth over time
- A less costly solution
- Whitening for lower levels for discoloration
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening works by lightening teeth from the inside out. The whitening gel usually contains either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The peroxide solutions lighten the enamel, which is the outer layer of the tooth, and the dentine, which is the inside of the tooth. When both the enamel and dentine are lightened, you get a much lighter or whiter colour of the teeth that can usually last for 2 to 3 years, if you opt for chair-side teeth whitening.
As compared to chair-side treatment, take-home kits are limit to very low levels of hydrogen peroxide by MOH regulation which is why they are not as effective as a chair-side treatment.
Are there any Side-Effects or Risks?
The most common side-effect of teeth whitening is tooth sensitivity, but this only temporary and usually last for a few days. If you start to experience sensitive teeth, try using specially formulated toothpaste for sensitive teeth to reduce the sensitivity, and it should fade over time. Some patients will experience gum soreness temporarily and it will go away after a while. When using whitening gel in your take-home kit, ensure to wipe off any excess gel from your gums to avoid sore gums. Visit your dentist if tooth sensitivity or gum soreness persists after teeth whitening treatment.
The Benefits of Teeth Whitening
- Whitening is the easiest anti-aging procedure and is non-invasive.
- Having a bright white smile builds confidence and self-esteem.
- Whitening is a less invasive way to whiten teeth as compared to veneers or crowns.
- Whitening is easy to maintain with take-home whitening kits. Just 30 minutes each time, and your teeth will retain their colour. Avoid foods and drinks that cause staining for the first 24 hours to get the ideal result.
- After whitening, patients will feel committed to take better oral care such as brushing and flossing daily in order to prolong the whitening effects.
NoFrills’ Teeth Whitening Procedure
The complete procedure takes less than an hour, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended before the Zoom teeth whitening session. The procedure will start with covering the lips and gums and leaving only the teeth exposed. Our dentist will then apply the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel on your teeth, which works together with the Zoom light, to dissolve a thin top layer of the enamel and releases oxygen into the teeth which help to break up stains and discoloration.
The gel is applied on top of your teeth with Zoom light in place for 15-minutes. This process is repeated 3 times for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. Once this process is completed, a fluoride paste-gel which helps to reduce sensitivity is applied to the teeth.
Before you leave the clinic, our dentist will advise you on the foods and drinks to avoid such as tea, coffee, red wine, cola etc. to prevent staining your teeth. Smoking is highly discouraged as it can greatly reverse the effects of teeth whitening treatment.
Who is Suitable for Teeth Whitening?
Our dentist will perform a thorough assessment of your teeth and gums to ensure good oral health before deciding if Zoom whitening is a suitable option for you. Our dentist will discuss with you and understand your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits before concluding if teeth whitening is beneficial for you. This consultation helps to determine if Zoom whitening or any other whitening method will best fit your wants and needs.
However, whitening may not be the most suitable option in certain cases. For example, patients with existing dental work, such as permanent crowns or veneers may want to check with our dentist on other options. Artificial teeth will not react to conventional whitening agents. Zoom whitening is typically not recommended for patients under 13 years of age, as well as pregnant or lactating women.
